Birthdays.

Today (January 15, 2026) is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s actual birthday, which also happens to be my birthday, too. Every year that coincidence invites me to reflect more deeply on courage, purpose, and legacy.

Dr. King taught us that the strength of a nation, and the health of a community, are measured by how we care for one another. At Impact100, we see that truth in action every day. Women who volunteer their time, bring neighbors together, and turn small gifts into transformational grants that change lives, neighborhoods, and entire communities.

Dr. King believed in the power of community action to reshape systems. This belief resonates deeply with me. In 2001, I set out to do just that, which led to the very first Impact100 chapter in my local community, Cincinnati, Ohio. That idea has now led to thousands of women making the very same choice to come together as a community to strengthen the systems supporting their home.

As we approach this Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (observed on 1/19/26), I’m reminded that service is the steady work of building community. He taught that the arc toward justice bends when people show up for each other. When we serve others, we begin to build a bridge of understanding. Our service reflects our values, our willingness to learn, and our heart posture.

When each of us does our part, we ensure that the next generation has better tools, stronger leaders, and more hope.

The 2026 MLK Day theme of building community and civic responsibility connects directly to our work. Service opens our eyes, and collective giving enables our hands to do more.

Today, my birthday wish is that you take a moment to reflect on the difference you want to make. Then turn that reflection into action when we celebrate his legacy on January 19th. Read Dr. King’s writings, listen to community voices, and do something tangible that advances dignity and opportunity in your town. Legacy lives when people take the lessons of history and apply them to the present.

If you’re taking action this MLK Day, we’d love to hear your story. Share a photo or a short reflection and tag @Impact100Global. We’ll amplify your work and celebrate how small acts lead to lasting change.
